Delivering Sustainable Supply of Scandium for the EU Industries
Europe imports 100 % of scandium, which is an essential ingredient for industrial production. Therefore, the goal of the EU is to reach strategic independency with competitive prices. EIT Raw Materials selected the ScaVanger project (2021-2024) to deliver this production facility from 2025 onwards.
About Scandium
Scandium (Sc) applications in solid oxide electrolyzer cells, aeronautics and 3D printing are forecasted to increase significantly without a sufficient continuous Sc supply for Europe. ScaVanger is upscaling Sc extraction and purification technologies from TiO2 pigment production residues. High purity Sc2O3 and ScF3 will be produced at competitive prices in the EU for the EU market. The ScaVanger process results in a 10 % higher production rate and higher purities as processing starts with a unique cleaning process of actinides. The first plant at a major European TiO2 pigment production site will continuously supply about 21 t/a of Sc2O3.
